Portland, Oregon, resident Cheng "Charlie" Saephan, recently became a multi-millionaire overnight when he won a record-breaking $1.3-billion Powerball jackpot. He and his wife Duanpen, and their friend Laiza Chao, who chipped in $100 for lottery tickets, celebrated the historic win.
Saephan, a machinist and father of two, shared that he’s battling cancer and recently underwent chemotherapy. He sees the lottery win as an opportunity to provide for his family and access better healthcare. He had been praying nightly for months, even sleeping with the numbers under his pillow, hoping for a miracle.
Oregon Lottery Director Mike Wells congratulated the winners, acknowledging the life-changing impact of the prize not only for the recipients but also for the state. The group opted for a lump-sum payment and took home over $422million after taxes.
