Yes...you CAN see Canada across Lake Erie

(Cleveland) - On a clear day, can you see Canada from Cleveland? The answer is "no"...usually.

But the recent warmer air temperatures have led us to an "optical refraction" across Lake Erie the last two nights.

This happens in the Spring & Autumn when the lake water temperature is radically different than the air temperature.

This shot was taken at Huntington Beach in Bay Village Sunday night at 11:00 P.M. by Jay Reynolds, a research astronomer for Cleveland State University. He measured the distance to Canada at approximately 50 miles.

 

The two stars in the upper right are Pollux & Castor of the winter constellation Gemini.
