(Cleveland) - Residents on the near west side are upset over the re-assignment of a popular police commander.

Second District Commander Keith Sulzer is stepping down from his current position on Wednesday, to assume the civil service rank of Captain.

He's to be assigned to the Division's Community Policing Unit, and will act as a liaison between the police department and the Cleveland Police Foundation.

Taking Sulzer's job in the second district will be Thomas Stacho, who is currently the Commander of Communications and Property.

A protest will be held outside Second District headquarters at 5:30pm. Pastor Angel Arroyo says Sulzer has been instrumental in reducing crime on the near west side, and has started a petition drive urging the mayor to keep Sulzer in his current position.

Arroyo tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that hundreds of signatures have been collected, with many residents believing they will be less safe without Commander Sulzer running the second district.
