(CHICAGO) — The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending later school start times for teens — at least until 8:30 a.m.

The influential group says teens should be getting 8½ to 9½ hours of sleep on school nights.

And it says a lack of sleep can lead to poor health, bad grades, car crashes and even depression and suicide.

But the National Association of State Boards of Education says later start times would mean more bus drivers would have to be hired, and later school days would affect sports activities, after-school jobs and homework time.
