Mayor proposing new gun code

Posted June 17th, 2014 @ 12:09pm

(Cleveland) - Saying more needs to be done to control gun violence in Cleveland, Mayor Frank Jackson announced Tuesday that he will send City Council a proposal for a comprehensive gun control code.

Council will take it up at their summer session on July 16.

Highlights of the proposed code include a gun offender registry, and prohibition of access to guns by convicted felons or minors.

Mayor Jackson and others at the City Hall news conference referred to last week's fatal shooting of two-year-old Derrice Alexander, Jr. His father has been charged in the shooting, which happened during a domestic argument.  Derrice Alexander, Sr. was a convicted felon, thus he shouldn't legally have had access to a gun.
