New Gun Laws Proposed for Cleveland

Posted July 15th, 2014 @ 10:27pm

(Cleveland) - Mayor Frank Jackson submitted a complete rewrite of the city's existing gun laws to Cleveland City Council on Tuesday. If passed all existing ordinances would be repealed and replaced.

The proposed laws would address specific needs for preventing gun violence and mirror existing state laws in the Ohio Revised Code.

Included in the proposal is a gun offender registry. It would require any gun law offender after the effective date to register with the city's Safety Director. Registration must occur within 5 days of release, the imposition of a sentence or within 5 days of becoming a resident if the offender did not live in the city at the time registration was required. Offenders are required to register annually for a period of four years.

The proposal will be formally presented at Wednesday's City Council Meeting.
