(Lorain County) - Elyria High School's Stacie Starr was named the nation's "Top Teacher" in a "Live with Kelly and Michael" contest on ABC-TV this morning.
Students went wild when the announcement was made locally on NewsChannel 5. Kids started jumping up and down and threw confetti. Starr gave them big hugs and started to tear up.
Starr tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, she still can't believe it, it was just an amazing situation. Starr says she could not have won without help from the students, fellow workers at Elyria High, and the entire community.
Among the prizes Starr is receiving include a 2014 Ford Escape, and a trip to the Bahamas.
But Starr says all she really wanted that the Gold Apple trophy handed out to each of the 5 finalists. Elyria High School is getting a $20,000 digital, wireless scoreboard for Ely Stadium.
Starr is a 14 year veteran of the Elyria Schools, and serves as a 9th grade intervention specialist, the assistant athletic director, and she coaches track.
