The secret to not getting drunk while drinking?

(CLEVELAND)- "On top of the silliness," says Scott Frank, MD, an addiction specialist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, "there are some health issues that may be a problem." Dr. Frank is reacting to comments from Jim Koch, co-founder of the Boston Beer Company and brewer of Sam Adams, who told Esquire he uses a spoonful of yeast before each beer to counteract the effects of alcohol.

Dr. Frank says each person reacts differently to alcohol and it's almost impossible to predict how the alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH) in the yeast will work to break down the alcohol and prevent drunkeness in a specific person's stomach.

He also says yeast is a living fungus and it will definitely produce gas while yeast allergies will become apparent when people consume multiple spoonfuls of yeast as opposed to consuming a small bit of yeast in bread. And he also worries hangovers could be worse.

"If you really need yeast to cut down on the effects of alcohol then you might be better off thinking about Alcoholics Anonymous than alcohol dehydrogenases," says Dr. Frank.

"If you don't want to feel the effect of the alcohol, why not just drink non-alcoholic beer?
