Idol Update!

Auditions this week kicked off in Los Angeles, the place where so many stars got their start. Rocker chick Avril Lavigne was the guest judge, the epitome of what Idol hopefuls are trying to achieve. She seems very fitting for the part of guest judge.

Creeper Neil Goldstein was the first weird audtioner of the night, with a supposed IQ of 168. (Anything over 140 is considered genius) He got really nervous when he got in front of the judges. Of course he had a terrible voice; I actually would have been very surprised if he had sounded good. Neil demanded to move ahead and would not accept the judges’ negative answer. Well at least he can have the award for sweatiest contestant.

We had maybe a first on American Idol, a pastor, Jim Ranger. He sang an original song which is usually a bad call for an Idol audition. Pretty good voice, nothing to write home about but he got through anyway. Oddly enough for a guest judge, Avril was the only one to say no to him.

Marshal Artist and flutist, Damien Lefavor has been trying to achieve one note for “years.” He had the most ridiculous audition, so whiney and awkward. After being turned down, he also ran into a piece of the set.

Mary Powers had a good rocker vibe which of course impressed the guest judge. She also had a funny little 8-year-old daughter. Mary is going to Hollywood; she may need a little makeover once she’s really on the show.

A.J. Mendoza actually got a review of his singing from last year’s runner-up Adam Lambert who supposedly liked his voice. It was a little choppy for me and sounded like it was for Simon too. Unfortunately, the judges didn’t like A.J. as much as Adam did.

A little surprise for day two was guest judge pop-star Katy Perry. She’s gorgeous girl, but very new to the scene.

Austin Fullmer was a tad over the top with his leather shirt and satin pants. He also had some out of control dance moves. He also mentioned that he wants people to “touch” him, a little weird.

Andrew Garcia wants to provide a better life for his little boy, and his father is an ex-gang member. Andrew had a jazzy voice which was surprising. Randy told him he had “mad vocals” which we usually don’t hear him say until the show goes to the stage.

Chris Golightly was a foster child to 25 different families and was ready to change his life. He had a beautiful voice and a Justin Guarini hair-do going on. Luckily Randy and Kara really loved him and he is going to Hollywood.
