Or as Kim Fowley would say "JAILBAIT...JACKPOT."
This is not the complete story of the Runaways but more the relationship of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie and their wildman manager/producer Kim Fowley. Michael Shannon who plays Fowley (who actually put them together based on a talk with Joan Jett outside of a rock club and a girl drummer he knew.) really steals the show with his much larger than life character. He's brilliant in it.
Kristen Stewart nailed, or rather channeled, Joan Jett. The relationship with Kristen and Dakota was easy for them because they've also been working together on the Twilight series, only problem is that in "Twilight" they are arch enemies and in "The Runaways" they love each other, sometimes more that just good friends. Dakota is going to be another one of those kid stars that will easily make the transition into grown up roles like so few get to; we witness her morphing into that with this film. I can only think of Jodie Foster, Helen Hunt, and Brooke Shields who did that well. Her performance taught me way more than I ever knew about Cherie Currie.
Great rockin and rollin film with Runaways music that has today's sound quality. I just wish it was able to tell more of the story from the whole group's point of view. But I guess a couple of them didn't want to be involved with this one.
