(Washington, DC)
- It appears that Valley View will be getting some much needed flood relief.

U.S. Senator George Voinovich announced Tuesday that Valley View has been awarded $1,078,125 for its Hazardous Mitigation Grant Program from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Sen. Voinovich, a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, worked to help ensure Valley View’s application was approved.

“I am pleased FEMA recognizes the need for this critical project in Valley View,” Sen. Voinovich said. “I will continue to fight to make federal funds available to aid Ohioans in their disaster prevention efforts.”

The proposed project includes the elevation of up to 21 residential structures and the acquisition and demolition of two in Valley View. The properties, which will be acquired and demolished, have suffered repetitive flooding.

The primary source of the flooding is the Cuyahoga River and its associated tributaries. The acquired land will be returned to open space, allowing flooding to occur without damage to property.

The elevation will be completed so that the first floor elevation of the home is two feet above the base flood elevation.

Voinovich says this project will protect the health, safety and welfare of Cuyahoga County residents. Additionally, he says it will reduce future flood insurance claims and the financial obligation of federal, state and local governments after a disaster.
