Prescription drug abuse "rampant" in Ohio

State data indicates heroin is on the increase as well.
Friday, October 24, 2008
(Columbus) - The Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services has released its biannual report on the latest drug trends across the state.

Department spokeswoman Amanda Conn-Starner says oxycontin use appears to be declining throughout many areas in Ohio. Despite that positive news, she warns that prescription drug abuse is still rampant.

Heroin use continues its rising popularity throughout Ohio, and a higher rate of treatment admissions related to the drug were reported. Demographically, white youth teenagers and young adults from suburban backgrounds are a fast-growing group of heroin abusers.

Methamphetamine appears to be on the decline in all reported areas, a trend that Conn-Starner attributes to hard-work by law enforcement and treatment centers throughout the state.

Marijuana was the most commonly used illicit drug by adolescents entering treatment, and was seen largely as a socially-acceptable drug.

Usage of crack and powdered cocaine remained relatively constant.
