Fire guts Parma apartment complex

Damage estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

(Parma) - Fire forced the evacuation of nearly 200 people at an apartment complex in Parma early Saturday morning.

The fire started in a first floor apartment at Midtown Towers at 5675 Broadview Road around 3:19 A.M. First arriving companies found heavy smoke and fire on the first floor and residents hanging out of windows to be rescued from the upper floors.

25 firefighters from five companies responded from Parma and were assisted by Seven Hills, Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights with the evacuation and ventilation of close to 225 units in the building.

Several residents and a police officer were treated on the scene and released for smoke inhalation and one Parma firefighter was taken to Parma hospital were he was treated and released.

Fire investigators were on the scene, but at this time have not determined a cause. Estimated losses will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
