(Cleveland)- Senator Sherrod Brown held a roundtable Monday in Cleveland to explore the role the Cleveland-Cuyahoga port plays in regional economic competiveness issues.
Brown says, there's opportunity in Ohio to increase the number of jobs. Tens of millions of dollars of stimulus money is available for ports so they can expand.
One way Ohio can increase business is by creating a containerized shipping industry. Brown says, right now there are bulk ships with iron ore and grain going in and out of the Great Lakes.
Another wave of the future may be with shipping alternative energy materials. Brown says, Toledo is becoming known as the Silicon Valley of alternative energy, and a port that can move those things in and out is essential.
The position of our ports makes it ideal for this type of industry. Brown says, we have a river to the south, the Great Lakes to the north, and two major ports on Lake Erie...Cleveland and Toledo.
