Voters in Lorain County say no to a sales tax hike

That means layoffs and cuts in 2010.
Wednesday, November 4, 2009
Lots of cuts are on the way in Lorain county, after issue 4 which would have increased the sales tax by one-half percent failed. Nearly 58 percent of voters said no...42 percent voted yes.

Commissioner Ted Kalo believes the issue went down because of the economic climate. Also the county had a higher then anticipated turnout and a lot of those were no votes.

Kalo says, they are going to cut transit service, cut back on economic development, possibly close the airport, and personnel cuts will be made across the county in 2010.

Most of the cuts to personnel will take place in the criminal justice system since Kalo says, that's 73-percent of their budget. Kalo says, this will set the county back 10 to 20 years.

The county has banked about $6-million from the sales tax so far this year, and that will help but Kalo says it won't pick up all the shortfall.
