(Cleveland) - Kyrie Irving's days with the Cleveland Cavaliers could be numbered if the All-Star point guard gets his wish.
In a meeting that took place last week, Irving asked the Cavaliers to trade him.
Sportswriter Hayden Grove of WTAM.com and Scout.com says the story has been verified from multiple sources.
Grove says Irving is tired of playing second fiddle to LeBron James, and apparently feels he can win a championship on his own with another team.
There are reports that James was informed of Irving's request and was blindsided and disappointed.
There's speculation the San Antonio Spurs are a team Irving listed as a preferred trade destination in the meeting, but also under consideration may be the Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Grove says the Cavaliers could probably get any player they want in a trade for Irving, but their best bet would be Russell Westbrook, who would match up well against the Warriors Kevin Durant.
If Irving is traded by Cleveland, he forfeits a "supermax" contract that would pay him over $200 million if he qualified.
The Cavs have had an eventful offseason, though not in positive ways. Their biggest move was parting ways with general manager David Griffin when his contract expired June 30.
There is word that the Cavaliers are preparing to name Koby Altman as their new general manager.
Irving's request to be traded leaves another cloud hanging over the franchise, which is also focusing on James' long-term future since he can opt out of his contract next summer.
