Akron - U.S. Marshals and Akron police have caught a man accused in the murder of a 4-year-old girl.
31-year-old Darnell Bitting was found Saturday afternoon at a home on Corley Street, and was taken into custody without incident, according to U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott.
Police say the child was killed Friday evening after Bitting fired at the car she was in.
The child's mother reportedly pulled up to a home on Mercer Avenue with her mother and four children in the car.
It's reported that when no one answered the door, she allegedly broke windows.
Police say Bitting came out of the house with a rifle, and fired at the vehicle, striking the little girl.
The child was pronounced dead at Akron Children's Hospital.
Marshal Elliott says during the course of the manhunt, they searched a vehicle belonging to an associate of Bittings, and found a duffle bag filled with over a dozen firearms, ballistic body armor and a hand grenade.
They were able to finally track down Bitting at the home of a female associate on Corley Avenue, and took him into custody without incident.
U.S. Marshal Elliott added:
“This is a senseless and horrific crime, that left an entire community grieving the loss of an innocent child.
The guns that were taken off the streets today were a result of the team work between all the law enforcement agencies who responded after hearing of the murder of this innocent victim.
These guns will no longer be a threat to the citizens of our community.”
