CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is not easing up when it comes to the safety of students this academic school year.
Students, staff, and guests will be required to wear masks for at least the first five weeks of school this August. Due to an increase in COVID cases, CEO of CMSD Eric Gordon's decision to require students and staff to wear masks comes from the CDC's updated guidelines for treatment of unvaccinated people. However, Gov. Mike DeWine's recent bill requires the equal treatment of the vaccinated and unvaccinated population.
Gordon made a public announcement on Monday evening addressing that whether you are vaccinated or not, you will be required to wear masks in Cleveland schools.
"Until updated CDC guidances (are) released with different recommendations, all CMSD students, employees and school guests, including those that are fully vaccinated will be expected to continue mask usage at school and during indoor school events and activities," Gordon says.
Though schools will have in person classes five days a week, parents have the option to enroll students in a virtual based curriculum. Gordon also says that the district plans to continue with the "Virtual Academy" and an official "Remote School" all staffed by CMSD educators.
