(Hudson) - Mayor Craig Shubert turned in his resignation to the City Clerk on Monday, this after he received a lot of national attention for his comment about prostitutes and fishing shanties.

Last week, during a City Council discussion on whether to allow fishing at a small lake in the city, Shubert said, "if you allow ice fishing with shanties, that leads to another problem. Prostitution."

Last week, Shubert said he had learned about prostitutes in fishermen's ice shanties wile working as a reporter for a TV station. When Shubert resigned, he said in a written statement, "My attempt to inject a bit of dry humor to make a point about this, in the midst of a cold snowy February, was grossly misunderstood."

In the fall, Shubert caught fire for his comments about a workbook used in a college-level creative writing class at Hudson High School.. The workbook gave over 600 suggestions for creative writing papers, some concerning sex or sexuality. Shubert said the book was equal to "child pornography," and he asked for the resignation of the entire Hudson Board of Education.

The office of Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said the workbook does not have any child pornography within its covers.

Shubert says his political enemies picked up on the prostitution message, saying, "Some in our community saw this as an opportunity to engage in the politics of personal destruction by means of character assassination, blaming me for the negative international press they helped to promote."

As for his departure, Shubert says with the majority of city council seats turning over, "City Hall is entering a new era. My role as a change agent is complete."
