Fernando Villavicencio, a presidential candidate in Ecuador, has been assassinated.

Villavicencio was killed while leaving a campaign rally in Quito.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso blamed the assassination on organized crime and called for a two-month state of emergency.

General elections, however, will still be held on August 20.

While not a frontrunner in the election, 59-year-old Villavicencio fought anti-corruption causes.

“I assure you that this crime will not go unpunished,” Lasso stated. “Organized crime has gone too far, but they will feel the full weight of the law.”
