Browns get Jackson back but Fujita misses practice

Injuries remained the game in Berea as 7 players missed practice on Thursday. Here are a few notes from today’s practice.

-Browns Coach Pat Shurmur has had to deal with questions about his run/patio ratio. Today he talked about his philosophy, “I think this, you have to score points and you have to score as many points as you need to win the football game.

Now, I think it’s very important that the running back is involved throughout the football game. I think that’s important and you need to be able to run the ball. I believe in running the football, but I think one has to go hand in hand with being able to throw the ball efficiently and explosively, which means you need to get completions and you need to get big plays.

I think that’s the way it is and when you run the ball you want to be efficient. You want to be able to get four yards a crack and then if you put players out there that have the skill and ability to get in the end zone like we’re starting to see with some of our young guys then it all ties together.”

-The Browns late in the afternoon cut 3rd string QB Thad Lewis to make room on the roster for the return of CB Joe Haden.

The team is also most likely going to make a move at WR, as much was made today inside the locker room about practice squad WR Josh Cooper taking multiple reps with the team and not on the scout team.

-The team has had a 4th captain each week and today Shurmur talked about his young guys like Trent Richardson trying to lead but also still being a little green, “I don’t know if he speaks out more than a typical rookie. I think rookies come in, and they try to establish themselves as teammates with their level of play. I think he’s starting to do that.

I think he has natural leadership ability. You’ve had a chance to visit with him. I think his answers are well thought out, and he understands his role on this team. All those things, I think, will make him a good leader as we go.”

-The injury list is long and daunting as the 3 wide receivers are missing as Travis Benjamin and Mohamed Massaquoi arm both nursing hamstring injuries. Jordan Norwood has a foot injury.

-The team got LB D’Qwell Jackson back but Scott Fujita missed practice with neck/shoulder injury. Plus defensive back CB Dimitri Patterson (ankle) and defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin (calf) missed practice as well. And usually if you don’t practice on Thursday you don’t play.
