-On a day that the teams new ownership watched from the sidelines the Browns had a spirited morning practice that was the 2nd red zone practice of the camp. -Greg Little made a handful of just outrageous one hand grabs that showed off his athletic ability in individuals then went out in 11 on 11 and made more strong plays.
-I talked with Joe Haden after practice and he said he feels like Greg” has had the most tremendous jump out of all of the receivers.” He came back in shape he’s running every route like it’s a game, he’s always been strong but he’s faster now, I think Greg is going to have a breakout season this year.”
-When asked about Josh Gordon, Haden talked first about his strength “he’s just gotta get his legs underneath him, at the beginning of practice he’s sharp and quick but slows down a little bit as practice goes on, so he just needs to get his conditioning up then he’s gonna be really good.”
-Monatrio Hardesty continues to impress day in and out. After practice he acknowledged that his teammates have ribbed him about ownerships allegiance to Tennessee his alma mater as well. He just smiled and said Rocky Top.
-Marcus Benard has had quite an up and down year. Last season he showed up to camp about 20 pounds heavier than the coaching staff wanted him. He had no idea that the coaches didn’t want him that big, but do to the lockout they didn’t communicate.
Then he had the motorcycle accident that ended his season. Now back and thankful to God for saving his life, and the Browns for bringing him back. Benard has looked good the past 2 days filling in for Frostee Rucker at defensive end. It’s not talk about much but the Browns will need someone to rush the passer from the opposite side of Jabaal Sheard on passing downs.
The team has brought in both Rucker and Juqua Parker but if Benard can come close to his 2nd year where he had 7.5 sacks that would make a huge impact for the defense.
- After practice Coach Shurmur had this to say about the Haslam family “I had a chance to meet the Haslam’s. It was brief, it was just before practice. What I found out, and it was just a brief meeting, and when you get to know the Haslam’s, you are going to find them to be very passionate people, very excited to own the Cleveland Browns.
It’s going to be a great mix for our team, our fan-base and the city. Again, I don’t know much more than that because we just met briefly. After these press conferences here I guess they are going to meet with the media a little later
- I’ll have a chance to sit down and talk more, but I this point, I saw passion in their faces. I felt passion in their handshakes, and that’s about what I can say about that at this point. They had an opportunity to watch practice which was great. I felt good about the work that we got done today.
I told the players, don’t let anything stop the train, the train is moving. That was more of a comment about the heat, training camp and what you go through. I think our guys again handled it very well. Today was a work day on the calendar. Tomorrow’s another work day, and then Sunday will be an off day. Our players understand the process, and they’re going through it in a very, very professional way.”
