WTAM 1100's Nick Camino breaks down the top high school football teams in Northeast Ohio and the Greater Cleveland area for the seventh week of the season.

1. St. Ignatius Wildcats: Last season the Wildcats won their 11th OHSAA State Championship in a year that not many would have projected them to do so. However, as the season progressed quarterback Eric Williams and the rest of his teammates got better and better each week, eventually winning the state crown. This year head coach Chuck Kyle's squad is different. The goal is to win another state title; but the difference is this season it would not come as a surprise to anyone. Already being compared to some of the best St. Ignatius teams in school history, the Wildcats throttled Glenville 35-7 on Saturday night at Byers Field to improve their undefeated record to 6-0 on the season. The win not only kept them atop the WTAM Power 11 poll, but also at the top of the unofficial OHSAA computer point standings. During their victory, quarterback Michael LaManna did not throw a touchdown pass, but was very effective through the air going 17-of-27 for 209 yards, while running back Tim McVey cruised for 145 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Similar to a year ago, the goal for St. Ignatius is to win their 12th OHSAA State Championship; however, this season it is expected. Week 7 vs. John Adams 10/6.

2. St. Edward Eagles: With the impressive season top-ranked St. Ignatius is having, it almost feels like undefeated St. Edward is being overlooked this year...that should not be the case. Head coach Rick Finotti's Eagles improved to 6-0 on the season Friday night, knocking off McDowell (Pa.) 34-23 moving them up to this No. 2 slot in the WTAM Power 11 poll and putting them into a great position to host a first round home game for the OHSAA Playoffs. St. Edward plays one of the toughest schedules in Ohio and if they run the table, it is conceivable that the Eagles could pass up the Wildcats in computer points. Finotti's squad still has regular season games with Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, Cincinnati St. Xavier, Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller and top-ranked St. Ignatius. In their recent win over McDowell, Eagles quarterback Ryan Fallon threw for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Week after week it appears St. Edward is only getting better, but everyone knows their ultimate test will come in three weeks when they clash with arch-rival St. Ignatius at Byers Field in the "Holy War". The highly anticipated showdown will settle a lot when it comes to bragging rights. Week 7 vs. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 10/6.

3. Mentor Cardinals: It appears the Cardinals are beginning to find their stride on both sides of the football. All season it was understood that Mentor's high-octane offense, led by quarterback Mitch Trubisky, would put up big points on the scoreboard, but a defense with nine new faces had a ton of question marks surrounding it. On Friday night head coach Steve Trivisonno's squad improved to 5-1 on the season with a 49-21 victory over Brunswick, it was the Cardinals most impressive victory up until this point. Offensively Mentor was great as usual. However, the Cardinals defense made second half adjustments to help pummel the Blue Devils and now it is evident this team has only gotten better since Week 1. If the OHSAA Playoffs began today, Mentor would not be hosting a first round home game, but that can obviously still change. The Cardinals battle Solon this week and the Comets will likely be playing for their postseason lives, but a victory would give Mentor another nice chunk of computer points. On Friday, Trubisky threw five touchdown passes, rushed for 71 yards and passed for 299 yard. Week 7 vs. Solon 10/5.

4. Willoughby South Rebels: With their toughest test of the season just behind them, now the Rebels can focus on getting geared up for a playoff run that could take them pretty far. On Friday night Willoughby South fought back to zip past previously ranked Chardon 35-14, a game they trailed early 14-13. Despite a weaker schedule, head coach Matt Duffy's squad picked up a load of OHSAA Computer Points for their victory over the Hilltoppers and now a first round home game for the postseason appears to be very realistic. Right now the Rebels are ranked No. 2 in the unofficial OHSAA computer point standings ahead of St. Edward and just behind St. Ignatius. Ohio Mr. Football candidate Kareem Hunt rushed for 275 yards and two touchdowns in Friday's victory over Chardon, but it was the Rebels defense that may have taken the most steps forward. In order to play with the elite teams in Northeast Ohio, the Rebels need to keep talented offenses off the field and right now it appears their defensive unit is doing that, showing improvement week after week. Week 7 vs. Madison 10/5.

5. North Royalton Bears: Rarely do teams jump other teams in the WTAM Power 11 poll, especially when both schools are victorious the previous week. However, the Bears impressive 49-17 victory over Normandy on Friday night, coupled with sixth-ranked Midview's hair-scratching close 8-0 win over North Ridgeville has pushed North Royalton up the rankings just past the Middies. More importantly, it appears head coach Nick Ciulli's squad is eying a first round home game for the OHSAA Playoffs sitting at No. 5 in the unofficial computer point standings. During Friday's win over the Invaders, senior quarterback Travis Tarnowski went 15-of-18 through the air for 326 yards and three touchdowns. By halftime the Bears led 35-3. The only question mark moving forward for North Royalton, similar to fourth-ranked Willoughby South is their defense. Both the Bears and Rebels are talented teams, but if they are going to make deep postseason runs, their defensive units have to continue to improve because solid play on both sides of the football is the only thing that might help them win OHSAA Playoff games they are not supposed to. Week 7 vs. Mayfield 10/5.

6. Midview Middies: An 8-0 victory over North Ridgeville was a little surprising considering the fact that all we have raved about for six previous weeks was quarterback Cody Callaway and the impressive Middies offense. However, it is still evident that Midview can turn on their high-octane offense at any time. What has unfortunately gone unnoticed for the Middies has been their defensive unit. Following their shutout against the Rangers, the Midview defense is only allowing 13.5 points per contest. Friday night's close win over 1-5 North Ridgeville did drop the Middies in the WTAM Power 11 poll, but it still kept them in the hunt for a first round home game for the OHSAA Playoffs. Right now Midview is ranked third in Division II Region VI (top four teams receive a home game first round. This Friday's match up with 5-1 Avon will be the perfect measuring stick for the Middies to see if they are a just a good team in Northeast Ohio, or a serious threat to try and win a Division II state title. Week 7 vs. Avon 10/5.

7. Cleveland Heights Tigers: The Tigers fall five spots this week following a stunning 34-12 loss to Euclid on Friday night. It might have been the worst loss under head coach Jeff Rotsky, but now Cleveland Heights has to hope it does not cost them a spot in the OHSAA Playoffs. Friday's loss to the Panthers already cost them a first round home game in Division I Region I, now a showdown on Oct. 12 with Warren G. Harding might mean make or break for the Tigers. Meanwhile, Euclid is now ranked No. 9 in Division I Region I for the unofficial computer point standings (top eight go to the playoffs). Even in a loss, quarterback Taylor Jones and wide receiver Shelton Gibson were impressive, hooking up from 70 yards out for a touchdown, but defensively Cleveland Heights has a lot to correct the next few weeks. The Oct. 12 game with Warren G. Harding may decide whether this talented group makes the OHSAA Playoffs or not. Week 7 vs. Warrensville Heights 10/5.

8. Chagrin Falls Tigers: Head coach Mark Iammarino's squad got back on the winning track Friday night with an impressive 59-14 victory over Wickliffe. The win not only moved them back up two spots in the WTAM Power 11 poll, it also got them back atop the unofficial OHSAA computer point standings in Division III Region IX. Chagrin Falls should finish this 2012 season with their lone loss to Kenston, because the rest of the way looks winnable. A first round home game is virtually a lock for the Tigers and believe it or not, their loss two weeks ago to the Bombers may have actually helped them. Sometimes teams respond better and play better following a loss, it appears Chagrin Falls is taking that approach. In their win Friday night over the Blue Devils quarterback Tommy Iammarino threw for 278 yards and five touchdowns, while running back Jack Campbell accounted for 189 yards on the ground and one touchdown. Week 7 vs. Painesville Harvey 10/5.

9. Avon Lake Shoremen: Which team currently sits atop the unofficial computer point standings in Division I Region II? If you said, Avon Lake, that is correct. It is hard to believe a team like the Shoremen, who bounce back each year between Division's I and II, remain in the postseason hunt regardless of which division they happen to be in. On Friday night Avon Lake improved to 5-1 on the season with an impressive 62-26 victory over Berea. Similar to Willoughby South and Midview, the Shoremen's offensive unit has a lot of different weapons that work behind a veteran-laden offensive line that boasts size. The big question mark is defense though, and making sure they keep talented opposing offenses off the field. Winning out appears to be realistic for Avon Lake, which would definitely lock them up a first round home game for the OHSAA Playoffs and might help they stay atop Division I Region II. Week 7 vs. Westlake 10/5.

10. Kirtland Hornets: It is not very often that you see smaller schools receiving love in the WTAM Power 11 poll, but for head coach Tiger LaVerde's squad, it is much deserved. Fresh off a Division V OHSAA State Championship in 2011, the Hornets look poised for another deep run through the postseason. Throughout Northeast Ohio there are plenty of great small schools that boast impressive football teams. However, in a power poll like this one, that ranks teams regardless of division, it is definitely tougher for them to get ranked. Yes, bigger schools might have worse records, but the fact is a lot of times they might still be able to beat the best teams in smaller divisions. With Kirtland however, that is not the case. The Hornets stack up with many of the teams in this current poll. On Friday night, the Hornets improved their undefeated record to 6-0 on the season overpowering Cardinal 54-0. Right now, LaVerde's Hornets are ranked No. 2 in Division V Region XVII, but they are definitely the favorite to come out of the region. Week 7 vs. Fairport Harding 10/5.

11. Nordonia Knights: While Avon Lake's surge to the top of Division I Region II might come as a surprise to many high school football fans throughout Northeast Ohio, the bigger surprise might just be Nordonia. In fact, if the OHSAA Playoffs began today in Division I Region II, the Knights would be hosting a first round home game at beautiful Boliantz Stadium. Ever since a Week 1 overtime loss to Mayfield, head coach Jeff Fox's teams has only gotten better winning every Friday since then. This past Friday, Nordonia improved its record to 5-1 on the season with an impressive 38-0 victory over Copley. The Knights boast size on both sides of the football and are led by quarterback Tyler Alders. Alders' brother Alex is just a sophomore and had a huge game at wideout catching three touchdown passes, while scoring on a 59-yard run and intercepting a pass. Alex Alders finished with 165 yards receiving. This balanced bunch has surprised everybody up until this point and they don't appear to be done yet. Week 7 vs. Tallmadge 10/5.

Other teams to watch for: St. Vincent - St. Mary Irish, Aurora Greenmen, Hudson Explorers, Solon Comets, Avon Eagles, Kenston Bombers and NDCL Lions.
