WTAM 1100's Nick Camino breaks down the top high school football teams in Northeast Ohio and the Greater Cleveland area for the eighth week of the season.

1. St. Ignatius Wildcats: The Wildcats stayed undefeated throttling John Adams 49-0 on Saturday afternoon at Byers Field. The victory kept head coach Chuck Kyle's squad atop both the WTAM Power 11 poll and more importantly, the unofficial OHSAA computer point standings in Division I Region I. St. Ignatius already has a first round home game locked up for the postseason, but cupcake victories like their recent one over the Rebels and an upcoming match up with 0-6 St. Francis (NY), could hurt the 'Cats as they prepare for a deep playoff run and a regular season finale with second-ranked St. Edward in the "Holy War". Week 8 vs. St. Francis (NY) 10/13.

2. St. Edward Eagles: Unlike their rival, top-ranked St. Ignatius, the Eagles will seemingly play anyone. Head coach Rick Finotti's squad might just have the toughest docket of regular season games in the entire state of Ohio, yet they are still undefeated at 7-0. Surprisingly a first round home game for the OHSAA Playoffs in Division I Region I is still not a lock, but upcoming match ups with Cincinnati powerhouses St. Xavier and Archbishop Moeller should prepare the Eagles for their Week 10 showdown with No. 1 St. Ignatius at Byers Field. This past Friday, St. Edward clobbered Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 54-14. The Oct. 27 "Holy War" will settle a lot when it comes to not only bragging rights, but a huge chunk of computer points for the OHSAA Playoffs. Week 8 vs. Cincinnati St. Xavier 10/13.

3. Mentor Cardinals: An impressive 56-28 drubbing of Solon keeps the Cardinals No. 3 in the WTAM Power 11 poll and it also inched them closer to hosting a first round postseason game at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium. It appears that week after week head coach Steve Trivisonno's squad is getting better, but right now St. Ignatius and St. Edward are clearly the top teams in Northeast Ohio. It almost feels like it's the Wildcats and Eagles...then everyone else. Offensively Mentor is as good as anyone though; in their win Friday night over the Comets, quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw a career-high six touchdown passes. Week 8 vs. Medina 10/12.

4. Willoughby South Rebels: All season long here at WTAM.com we have harped on the fact that the Rebels play an easy regular season docket of games, but this team is impressive week after week and now appear ready to make the next step. Friday night Willoughby South dismantled Madison 41-0 and while running back Kareem Hunt was fantastic again rushing for 214 yards and five touchdowns, the Rebels defense pitched a shutout showing their improvement since Week 1. It appears the Rebels will host a first round home game in the postseason for the second consecutive season, but unlike a year ago...this team looks poised to make a deeper run. Week 8 vs. Lakeside 10/12.

5. North Royalton Bears: The Bears barely avoided an upset bid by Mayfield Friday night, just outlasting the Wildcats 42-35 in an offensive showdown. Once again it was quarterback Travis Tarnowski leading the way for North Royalton as the senior signal caller went 16-of-24 through the air for 305 yards and two touchdowns, he also rushed for a score. Similar to second-ranked St. Edward, the Bears do not have a guaranteed first round home game when it comes to the OHSAA Playoffs in Division I Region I, but their regular season finale with Hudson will serve as the perfect measuring stick for head coach Nick Ciulli's squad. Week 8 vs. Cuyahoga Falls 10/12.

6. Cleveland Heights Tigers: Win or go home. That is the situation for head coach Jeff Rotsky's squad heading into this week's showdown with Warren Harding. If the Tigers can come away victorious, it should give them enough computer points for the OHSAA Playoffs in Division I Region I. A loss, will likely cost them a spot in the postseason. Ironically, it is the same situation for the Raiders...if Warren Harding can win, they will likely lock themselves up a spot for the playoffs. This past week, Cleveland Heights did get back on the winning track with an impressive 47-8 victory over Warrensville Heights, but their lone loss to Euclid could eventually cost them a bid to November tournament play. Week 8 vs. Warren Harding 10/12.

7. Chagrin Falls Tigers: Two weeks ago the Tigers suffered their only loss of the season when they were stunned by Kenston 28-17. Since then, Chagrin Falls has used their lone loss as a wake up call winning two-straight games outscoring their opponents 114-20 in those contests. During Friday's 55-6 drubbing of Painesville Harvey, Tigers senior quarterback Tommy Iammarino passed for 144 yards and three touchdowns. If the OHSAA Playoffs in Division III Region IX began today, Chagrin Falls would be the top-seed hosting a first round home game. However, it will not be an easy road considering Region IX features Ravenna, NDCL and St. Vincent - St. Mary. Week 8 vs. West Geauga 10/12.

8. Nordonia Knights: Over the last 12 years in Northeast Ohio, Region I has always received more love and most times rightfully so. Not only has it featured better teams, but it includes more local teams than Region II. However, both are regions of Division I and this season Region II features many local teams look to make deep runs through the OHSAA Playoffs, including the surprise squad of this season, Nordonia. The Knights moved up to No. 2 in Division I Region II just behind Toledo Whitmer and when this season finally comes to an end, they should host a first round postseason game. On Friday night Nordonia zipped past Tallmadge 34-28. Week 8 vs. Revere 10/12.

9. Kirtland Hornets: Small schools rarely get featured in the WTAM Power 11 poll, especially from Division V. However, this Hornets team definitely belongs among Northeast Ohio's elite and would beat many of the better teams in Divisions I and II. Head coach Tiger LaVerde's squad dominated Fairport Harding 64-20 on Friday night virtually locking up a first round postseason home game in Region XVII. During their victory, running back Damon Washington rushed for 189 yards and five touchdowns keeping the Hornets undefeated and among the Greater Cleveland area's best. Anything less than back-to-back OHSAA state titles would be a disappointment for this talented bunch. Week 8 vs. Berkshire 10/12.

10. St. Vincent - St. Mary Irish: The jury is still out on this team, but for now they do belong in the WTAM Power 11 poll. The Irish started the season as a "team to watch for", but a Week 4 loss to Youngstown Cardinal Mooney hurt them considerably, especially the way they lost (41-15). It was the same Cardinal Mooney team that lost to Lake Catholic and got throttled this past week by No. 2 St. Edward. Nevertheless, St. Vincent - St. Mary is improving week after week and on Friday night they dismantled Marion Harding 70-20. Despite their recent impressive victories, head coach Dan Boarman's squad will control their OHSAA Playoff fate the final two weeks of the season when they battle Massillon Washington and Ursuline in back-to-back weeks. Week 8 vs. Barberton 10/12.

11. Avon Eagles: Welcome back! The Eagles return to the WTAM Power 11 poll for the first time this season, a place they became quite familiar with last year. On Friday night Avon throttled formerly ranked Midview 28-0 in a game not even as close as the final score might indicate. If the OHSAA Playoffs in Division II Region VI began today head coach Mike Elder's squad would host a first round game. That will probably hold true as the Eagles remaining schedule is not that difficult. Ever since a tough Week 1 loss to Avon Lake, in which the Eagles has 11 players missing due to suspension, the purple and gold have gotten better and better. If this squad peaks at the right time, not only should Region VI be concerned, but all of Division II. Week 8 vs. Vermilion 10/12.

Others teams to watch for: Aurora Greenmen, Hudson Explorers, Midview Middies, Westlake Demons, NDCL Lions, Kenston Bombers and Shaker Heights Red Raiders.
