I’m going to be off the air and off work for four weeks. That’s because I’ll be going into surgery at Cleveland Clinic Thursday, January 27.

I’ve had a bit of a problem hearing out of one ear for the past couple of years. Before finding a regular doctor whom I liked, I went to Minute Clinic and “doc in the box” kinds of places. I thought I had water in the ear. There was nothing in my ear that anyone could find. In August of 2010, I was sent to an ear specialist. He confirmed that my hearing was diminished in my left ear. I came back for a follow-up visit in December. No change. I was sent for an MRI. The MRI showed that I had a benign tumor next to my inner ear.

That growth is called an Acoustic Neuroma. It grows on the inner ear. It can press against the nerves that affect hearing, balance and the facial muscles. Left untreated, it can grow, eventually disabling those nerves, and even pressing on the brain.

To treat this growth, I could have just had the doctor observe it. I could have had the doctor treat it with radiation. I elected to go with surgery. I want it gone.

My surgery is set for Thursday the 27th. I’ll be in the hospital as long as four days, and out of work for four weeks.

The reason for the long convalescence is that I’ll need time to get my body accustomed to balancing without one of my balance nerves, and also because it takes time to recover from brain surgery (the access to the inner ear is through the skull and under the brain). I’ll also have to regain the use of the facial muscles, so that I’ll be able to talk properly again. My goal? To be able to say “Cleveland’s only Newsradio, WTAM 1100” as soon as I can.

If all goes well, I should be back at work the end of February. Until then, I’ll post updates on my Facebook page, and you can post messages for me there (http://www.facebook.com/tom.moore1100) or you can e-mail my personal account at tmoore56@aol.com. Prayers are also gladly accepted.

Many thanks to Darren Toms for adjusting his schedule to fill in for me while I’m gone.

See you back with Wills and Snyder at the end of February.

(Note:  If you're coming to this blog for the first time, and seeing some of my old blog entries below, and wondering why they're in random chronological order (or actually, all posted with the same date, there's been a corporate issue that caused all of my previous entries to get mixed up.   Look at it this way:  you can read a variety of my past entries as if they're new!)
